This is indeed a very brave woman

Thanks to Alan at Meet an Atheist for posting this one. Alan states, "Here is another very brave woman living in a suppressive Arab country." This is very encouraging to see women speaking out against oppression despite the great dangers they put themselves in.

This was a really good video to show. I think it’s also a great discussion topic as well. I did notice though that the title is a bit off. It says Islamic Clerics Authorize Sexual Abuse of Children, but there is a difference that I don't think most Americans don't understand. It is the Shiite clerics that authorize this type of behavior not the Sunni clerics. In the Islam world the Sunni's don't consider the Shiites Muslims, just as the Catholics don’t consider the Mormons Christians. The Sunni’s don’t consider Shiite’s real Muslims not because of just the faith differences, (they follow different lineage after Mohammad then the Sunni’s) it ethical. Sunni’s don’t practice the muta'h marriages, which the Shiites do. There are several faith practices that differ between the Shiite’s and the Sunni’s, but I won’t go into all of them but I will say that some of the Shiite practices are really crazy! The muta’h marriage is basically a man can marry a woman for one hour or one day or however long he wants, so its religion justifying a form of prostitution. If you understand some of the religious differences and history this discussion this lady did is much more interesting. Just thought I’d share that.

sara michelle, thanks for sharing. Most of us here do understand history and the religious differences between Shiite and Sunni muslims.

Depending on what country you are talking about Sunnis and Shiites are both pretty equal in how they oppress women's rights. I would not want to be a woman in any part of Islam.

Talibans were sunnis. :) And the word Taliban means cleric.

Hi Roya, thanks for the input. If anyone knows about this area of the world, you do!

Actually, I thought the word Taliban came from Talib, which means student, though the translations might be interchangeable.

Interesting article at Yahoo news today. May be redundant for some, news to others.

Islam's Sunni-Shiite split

tommy, you are right but the word Talib is mainly used for students of Islam because Islam is seen as "THE" source of knowledge. So basically Taliban means clerics.
