High school in our area has become a 4 year sentence for young people. Our high school has added so many requirements for graduation that it has become a prison.
Classes last all year long.
Yet the classes(Math and Science) are basically the same material as college. The problem is that in the whole year they do not cover the material that is covered in one semester of college. They take math classes and split them up into so small a section that it means nothing. When I went we had 4 classes, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2 and Trig, and Calculus. In high school at least 6 classes if not 8.
Because the classes are all year long students become bored with the education process. They get used to the slow pace and are not ready for the responsibilities of college.
This could be the main reason many drop out the first year of college.
My suggestion is that high school should be no longer than two years. Take the money that would have been spent on the last two years of high school and spend it on Community College. That would give all our students a jump start on a 4 year degree.
