Prayer is attempted coercion
It is a form of violence against one’s chosen god
Telling the immortal what to do.
If you do not do this I will not do that
Ex: I do not get a new bike, I will not follow you.
Frank Herbert, God Emperor of Dune
Freethinker: : one that forms opinions on the basis of reason independently of authority; especially : one who doubts or denies religious dogma By all means let's be open-minded, but not so open-minded that our brains drop out. Richard Dawkins, in "Science, Delusion and the Appetite for Wonder,"

Wow. I 've never heard that definition of prayer before. I guess some people are like that though.
I define prayer as communion with Ultimate Reality, whether it is regaurded as personal, impersonal, or beyond them both. The way I see it, prayer defines human nature in it's highest sense, in its efforts at spiritual attainment, and inner change of heart, mind, and behavior. It is the fundamental and perennial method of scaling the heights and probing the depths of The Real.
I guess that's just one way of looking at though. I'm sure people would disagree.
I like that, it was pretty funny.
Yep, it's pretty funny because it's so true for so many people. My husband and I were just talking yesterday about the Lord's Prayer and the way it is worded is demanding. "Give us", "Forgive us"...
Most prayer is selfish beggary. I like that phrase coined by JD a few years ago.
