Regarding the idea that there are all kinds of religions out there making all kinds of claims and each thinks they are right: This is true. And it is true that it is “all a matter of what people choose to believe”. The important question is, is one’s faith (that is, what they choose to believe) a blind, unreasonable faith, (like atheism, or Muhhamedism, for example) or is it a faith backed up by the evidence? The bible is backed by evidence. It is filled with perfectly fulfilled prophecies. No other book or belief system on the face of the earth is even remotely like the bible. Here’s a prophecy written down 2000 years ago. In 2009, take a look around as this is preparing to be implemented.
Yes, it is a matter of what people choose to believe. And atheism is not a “faith”, and it’s Islam or Muslim, not “Muhhamedism”. And no, the Bible is not backed with “evidence”. It’s fiction backed up with more and more fiction. “Prophecy? What prophecy? There have been many “prophecies” from many religions. And in 2009 it is appalling that there are folks who live by the writings in an ancient mythology book of gruesome fairy tales.
[ed. note: Just to clarify what I mean by "it's a matter of what people choose to believe"...The god believers have a choice about whatever type of god they choose to believe in, according to whatever prejudices, bigotry, desires, and needs they might want to support. Atheism is not a "faith" but a lack of belief in gods and goddesses. Hope that clears that up.]

It drives me crazy when I hear atheism referred to as a "religion". It is by very definition the lack of faith. Perhaps the biggest disservice to atheists is their being labeled at all. What do you call someone who doesn't believe in the Easter Bunny? You don't call them anything at all. You call them normal. There is no more justification for believing in one God or another than there is to believe in the Easter Bunny.
I know this quote has been bandied about quite a bit on the 'net, but I still like it and think it fits, "I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."
dbackdad, I don't like the label either. I have taken to just saying NONE when people ask me my religion. NONE...simple, to the point so I don't get them trying to label me and what I believe or don't believe.
I think they say that atheism is a religion just to rile us up. Websters take it even further and say that atheism is lack of belief in the existence of gods or goddesses. a-without theism god beliefs. But I have beat that one over their heads and they ignore that.
I like that quote, "I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you understand why I dismiss yours"...I like that. That was Dawkins wasn't it?
But people like Mikey would tell you that the other gods are false and the only true god is his god because the bible says and the bible is true because the bible says it's true. Sigh....
Yeah, sigh.....
