Sigmund Freud

"Religion... comprises a system of wishful illusions
together with a disavowal of reality,
such as we find in an isolated form nowhere else but in amentia,
in a state of blissful hallucinatory confusion."

Oh very good quote, I love Freud!
In many ways Freud was a man “preoccupied with fixed ideas” – William James but “all psychology begins with Freud” – Erik Erikson.
Freud is easily one of the most profound a brilliant individuals to be grossly misunderstood and mischaracterized.
Sigmund Freud has a plethora of quotes regarding religion, here are two more that I can remember off the top of my head. If I can find it I know that I have a really eloquent and long quote regarding religion by Freud….

“Religion is an illusion and it derives its strength from the fact that it falls in with our instinctual desires.”

“The more the fruits of knowledge become accessible to men, the more widespread is the decline of religious belief.”
