Making it up as they go along....

They finally admitted that Limbo was a fantasy place, now how many centuries will it take for them to admit that heaven and hell are only mythical places invented by human imagination? The lengths Christians go to in order to adjust their religion to fit their desires, making their god and their religion any way they want it to be is quite desperate in their attempts to avoid the inevitable. Why don't they just give it up, stop obsessing about death, and start looking at life in a positive way?

Catholic Church buries limbo after centuries

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Roman Catholic Church has effectively buried the concept of limbo, the place where centuries of tradition and teaching held that babies who die without baptism went.

In a long-awaited document, the Church's International Theological Commission said limbo reflected an "unduly restrictive view of salvation."

The 41-page document was published on Friday by Origins, the documentary service of the U.S.-based Catholic News Service, which is part of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Pope Benedict , himself a top theologian who before his election in 2005 expressed doubts about limbo, authorized the publication of the document, called "The Hope of Salvation for Infants Who Die Without Being Baptised."

The verdict that limbo could now rest in peace had been expected for years. The document was seen as most likely the final word since limbo was never part of Church doctrine, even though it was taught to Catholics well into the 20th century.

"The conclusion of this study is that there are theological and liturgical reasons to hope that infants who die without baptism may be saved and brought into eternal happiness even if there is not an explicit teaching on this question found in revelation," it said.

"There are reasons to hope that God will save these infants precisely because it was not possible (to baptize them)."

Well, we all know that is a waste of time because as the Old Testament shows repeatedly, god hates babies !

They must have been losing members. I think it is kind of like when a TV show has experienced a ratings drop and they add a new character to revive viewer interest.

Umm...we may have made this *one* thing up so you shouldn't feel obligated to believe it anymore. But, please, please continue believing the rest of our material! Additionally, because there is no limbo for little, innocent babies to go to, we have more reasons to believe that our loving God will save them. Think of this as a bonus rather than a subtraction. : )

Who are they kidding?!

I thought that the Catholic Church had given up on Limbo a while back (the 1990's springs to mind)?

Limbo/Purgatory was indeed 'invented' to get around the philosophical/theological problem of unbaptised babies - innocent & yet not 'saved'. Religions do this kind of thing all the time - and then take centuries to change their minds. I think that's why they call it *Dogma*. [grin].

Does this mean that the catholic church has "jumped the shark?"
