LINK: MORE ABOUT THE "MORALS" OF GOD
Whenever we read ... the cruel and tortuous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we call it the word of a demon than the word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize humankind. And, for my own part, I sincerely detest it, as I detest everything that is cruel. -- Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason
Remember this whenever xians ask you where you get your morals from and tell you they get their's from God.

In the days that I used to post on Spymac's 'Sanctuary' I was amazed at the number of fundies who claimed that they would murder their entire family (who they loved 'almost as much as they loved Gawd'), if they heard 'God' telling them to do so.
The next question I asked was, "How would 'God' tell you to do this?"
The answer was always the same: "Gawd speaks directly to me, I hear him inside my head, or heart, or 'He' sends me 'signs', or somesuch lunatic claims."
But what is really frightening is that these people were not posting from within a secure mental facility whilst the staff's back was turned. They were alive and well, free, and could be living right next door to you.
Violent gods have violent followers. There is plenty of instances in the bible where god is violent and where the violence of god's followers is condoned and approved of.
The story of Abraham and Isaac is taken as christians as a test of faith. The reality is that Abraham was prepared to kill his own son because he believed that a god told him to.
That the god supposedly changed his mind at the last minute makes no difference to the fact that a person who believes absolutely that a god tells them to kill their children, should be prepared and willing to do so.
This makes their morality to have a very suspicious basis indeed.
BeepBeep,
That isn't morality, that is psychopathology.
These people are nutters, to use the professional terminology.
I found this via Aaron Kinney's blog:
http://voxday.blogspot.com/2007/02/mailvox-sharpening-knives.html
& this guy, who posted, said it would be NO CONTEST - if gawd said so, he'd do it. Why argue? It's gawd's will, ain't it?
How could anyone on earth be able to distinguish between the psychotic nutjob & the divinely inspired?
Oh, riiiigghhhtt..there is none.
Oops, link got cut. Sorry, you can find those nutters here.
ka - nutters is right! This is creepy to think that these people could be our neighbors and are running around free! If it's not based on religion, people who would go around talking about killing children would be arrested and jailed or confined to a mental institution.
But it's ok for people to say they would kill children if an imaginary sky daddy told them to and it's "respected". This world is really fucked up.
KA,
Not only is the original poster on that thread a complete pscyhopathic nutter and a dangerous menace to everyone around him, but those who posted comments supporting him are too.
Scary.
the merchant of menace, your comment has scared me with the extremes that people are wiling to go. Since these people also go around saying how this gawd talks to them they can have imagined something and we get another psychotic murderer...
Brilliant. Love it and will remember that.
The bible is merely a mirror or words which shows what we humans are: savages.
Sorry, but it so. Don't blame me.
Clearly any moral person would have said no to God's request to kill their child. Either way Abraham would have been in hell according to the story. He could kill his child and suffer from the psychological torment or disobey God and end up in Hell. I would have choosen the latter, but then again I'm just a moral atheist. Additionally, this is a bit off-topic, but any moral guideposts that bases itself on a threat of eternal violence is immediately suspect.

Further searching shows that they're an offshoot of Worldnut daily. Also, they're up to almost 3,000,000 hits since October 2005.
The calmer voices, where are they?

They actually have more cognitive dissonance posts, where they think they're explaining themselves better.
The more religious, the more disconnected, I say.
KA,
Frightening statistic, that.
It was the same on Spymac - a few atheists condemned the religious nutters who first said they'd kill their families if 'God' told them to, and immediately afterwards there was a deluge of support for the would-be homicidal religionists, all of which swamped any criticism made by the few sane people who bothered to comment against this madness.
I don't understand that "Go kill your only child" thing either, and i am one of those Nutters :o)
Back in Abrahams time and country, the culture was soooo different to ours. But i still don't get that.
