. . .is this really 2006?

Iraqi Shi'ites devotees perform self-flagellation near the Imam Hussein shrine in Kerbala, 70 miles south of Baghdad February 7, 2006. Hundreds of thousands of Shi'ites travel to the Iraqi city of Kerbala for Ashura each year to commemorate the death of Imam Hussein, one of Prophet Mohammad's grandsons who was buried there after he and his followers were massacred in 680 AD. I was shocked to find out while reading about self-flagellation that there are goofball catholic sects in Italy, Spain and Portugal who do this stuff too! And in the Philippines they do it to AND some even do "self-crucifixion". They call it mortification of the flesh. Here is a link

All this has got me in the mood to watch some Monty Python!

It´s their problem. If they wanna make themselves bleed, it´s ok. I think it´s stupid, but who are we to criticise.

If people did that to themselves in public in this country they would be picked up by the authorities and committed to the funny farm for their own protection.

No, anonymous, it's not just their problem. These are the people who not only abuse themselves, but kill infidels and commit other atrocities.
