Fundie GOP Rep says no need for "pesky environmentalists" . . .

. . . . . because “someone did that 2,000 years ago ”

GOP Rep. To Environmentalists: Jesus Already Saved The Planet

We like to keep track of the, er, intriguing sayings of Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, the Christian Right champion from Minnesota. But this latest is really out there — Bachmann says we don’t need pesky environmentalists like Nancy Pelosi around, because Jesus already saved the planet!

“[Pelosi] is committed to her global warming fanaticism to the point where she has said that she’s just trying to save the planet,” Bachmann told the right-wing news site OneNewsNow. “We all know that someone did that over 2,000 years ago, they saved the planet — we didn’t need Nancy Pelosi to do that.”

Wow.

Other recent Bachmannisms include the claim that there isn’t actually any wildlife in the areas of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge where she wants more drilling, and the allegation that Democrats want high gas prices so as to force people to move into “inner cities” and “the urban core.”

I'm not sure what is worse -- people who worship an imaginary God-human, or environmentalists who worship dirt and pond scum. Close call.

BTW, Tom Skilling reported that Chicago this decade has had the fewest 90 degree days on record since 1930. Our highest temp this summer: 91 degrees.

JHB - what about this whackadoo saying Jeebus saved the planet 2,000 years ago? That's pretty nuts. Why do anything then? Why run for political office? Why fight crime? Why fight wars? Why try to make anything better at all? Jeebus saved the world already (snark)

Global warming doesn't mean the world is getting warmer. I think the phrase is misleading. The phrase should be environmental changes, some escaberated by human beings and pollution we cause, others are natural changes we can do nothing about.

If we assume the orthodox Christian doctrine, it still isn't true that Jesus saved everyone. It is a necessary condition (and not a sufficient condition) that one believe the Jesus story in the first place to get saved. We're saved -- psyche!

There's a good book out there titled "Jesus Rode a Donkey" by Linda Seger arguing that that Jesus would have embraced Democrat positions. I agree with Seger completely.

Stardust, I think a better term would be global climatic disruption. I remember Bill Maher saying that the problem with getting people to worry about global warming is that warming sounds nice.

I don't know about any environmentalists "worshipping" dirt and pond scum, Jason, though maybe there are a few.

I have to admit that this summer has been the coolest I remember in quite a while. It certainly is helping to keep my electric bill down, as I have hardly used my central air conditioning at all.

One of the things to keep in mind though is that just because the Earth is warming does not mean that everywhere every year will be warmer than the year before. Our climate system is too complicated to work like that. After all, you can have a stock market in decline over a long period of time, but still find one or two sectors that show growth. The fact that one or two sectors are showing growth does not belie the fact that the market is in overall decline though.
